How I Became A Morning Person

Carter has eaten every 2 hours since he was born. As a mommy who exclusively breastfeeds, this sometimes is challenging. Don’t get me wrong, I love breastfeeding Carter. It has given me yet another way to connect with my little boy. The nights that I get little sleep are difficult, but sitting skin to skin with my baby? That is worth more than a full nights sleep.

Since we came home from the hospital almost six months ago (I know, I can’t believe it either), he really hasn’t slept much. You would expect a newborn baby to sleep for a long time, right? Well, wrong.  As a newborn Carter woke up every hour – two hours to eat and often times would not get back to sleep. Now he sleeps more but his schedule is so sporadic that I would hardly say he gets a full nights rest. Reality has truly slapped me in the face that I will probably get no sleep for a long while. For a week or two he slept almost 5 hours before waking to eat. I don’t know what we did, I don’t know how it happened, and I don’t know how to get it back.

It’s not really an issue that Carter doesn’t sleep much because I wake up to every little noise now. You can call it being over-protective or having sensitive sense or you can call it being super mom (preferably).

Although I wake up a lot and Carter wakes up a lot, I love my time with Carter. Whether it’s 6:00 pm or 3:00 am. We sit together, skin to skin. Sometimes we have little chats, sometimes we simply sit in silence, sometimes we get back to sleep and sometimes… 3 am becomes the start of the day.

I’ve learned to accept the sleepless nights. The time I have with Carter is precious and despite being awake 20 out of 24 hours (no, not 4 hours straight of sleep.. 1 hour at a time people), I have grown to love mornings, especially spent with my little man.
